I was raised in the Province. When I was young I always look forward travelling to the CiTy of Manila. Now that I reside in Metro Manila and have traveled in various places the following quotation made a lot of sense to me: “IT’S BETTER TO SEE SOMETHING ONCE THAN HEAR ABOUT IT A THOUSAND TIMES.” With the many travel promotions offered today opportunities to travel locally and abroad becomes easy. In today’s gospel reading, Jesus summoned the Twelve and sends them on a mission to preach repentance, heal the sick, and cast out demons. The Lord Jesus instructed them to TRAVEL IN TWO’S AND TO TAKE NOTHING FOR THE JOURNEY BUT A WALKING STICK – NO FOOD, NO SACK, NO MONEY IN THEIR BELTS (Mark 6:8).

He sent them as itinerant ministers and to live solely on the kindness of strangers. Jesus also added, “And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them” (Mark 6:11).

Today’s gospel text is not intended to be an admonishment to became an itinerant preacher. As a matter of fact, wandering or travelling preacher isn't the only model for ministry.

(Did you note that after being rejected in Nazareth, Jesus forgot to shake off the dust from his sandals?) Times and cultures have changed and we know that this practice is not the best way to spread the Gospel today. Still, it should give us some pause as many of us worship in well-appointed sanctuaries and live with salaries, pensions, and any number of shoes and extra clothes. Would you agree that we are living in a world that is more and more characterized by unbelief? If so, doesn't it feel as if we are living in a Nazareth-world -- a culture that is, at best, disinterested in Jesus? AT PRESENT WE CONSTANTLY TRAVEL, TAKING FOR GRANTED THAT WE ALSO PROCLAIM (consciously or unconsciously) OUR FAITH BY WHAT WE SAY AND DO IN THE PLACES WE GO. Every trip we make, we still take too much upon ourselves, and so, we lose sight of the graces we receive along the way, the opportunities to experience God’s love, and the opportunities to experience fully all the gifts God has bestowed on us. Just as the disciples were sent out two by two, WE ARE SENT ALSO TO SERVE TOGETHER.

BEING SUCCESSFUL IN MINISTRY IS KIND OF A TEAM EFFORT. We now live in a world that glorifies the idea of working on our own, or doing things our own way, or being independent. These are not bad ideas in and of themselves, but WE ARE SOMEWHAT CREATED TO WORK TOGETHER, NOT ALONE. We are members of the body of Christ, we function splendidly together. Brothers and sisters, we are reminded that WE ARE EACH A CHILD OF GOD.

Today, we travel constantly: WHEN WE WALK INTO A ROOM, OUR GRACE CAN BRING A SMILE TO THE FACE OF A HURTING SOUL. OUR GOODNESS CAN BRING PEACE TO A HOME FILLED WITH NEGATIVITY. OUR LIGHT CAN DRIVE OUT THE DARKNESS. These are not just gifts for the twelve disciples; this is our gift as well.

As Christians, we are being ordered and missioned out into the world to do good work – to serve for the greater glory of God – and we will not be alone. AS BELIEVERS, AS CHRIST’S FOLLOWERES, WE MAY MARVEL AT THE UNBELIEF AROUND US, BUT STILL WE GO FORTH, PROCLAIMING AND PRACTICING OUR FAITH IN CHRIST. We do have one thing those disciples did not, and it makes all the difference. We have experienced the faithfulness of God in Jesus crucified and risen.
