Collectors’ examples: • • • • • Italy Since 1985, Italy has used a font based on DIN 1451, although the weight is a little lighter than usual for number plate implementations. Prior to that, the font had been changed a few different times. As far back as about the late 1920s, a squarish sans design was used. In 1932, the font was changed to an oldstyle serif design, then in 1951, switched back to a sans serif, though not so constructivist in style as DIN. About this typeface: A close replica of Switzerland’s number plate lettering. Switzerland’s font seems to show multiple influences. Some characters are based on, such as C, G, O, and Q, which retain DIN’s circular rounds, while other characters with rounded shapes such as B, D, P, and R feature more squarish rounds, similar to or alphabets.
Some of the numbers, however, exhibit oval-shaped curves akin to, but a bit different from, those seen in American license plates, while the odd zero character with its base wider than its top recalls the capital O from Germany’s. Definitely a mixed brew.
