I've been thinking of picking one of these up but i'm wondering if I should be looking at virtual instruments instead. The immediacy of just turning it on and getting to work appeals to me but i'm very aware it's getting a bit long in the tooth technology wise. I use Logic 9 but something about my workflow and using a mouse to change sounds etc seems to kill my creativity. I'm a guitarist but i'm moving away from doing session work more into writing.
I'll be pitching to pop artists so radio ready sounds are important. I also own reason 4 and there's a deal on the KVR forum for 'All three Ultra Series bundles: Ultra Symphonic, Ultra Hip Hop and Ultra Electronic as well as the Reason 4 updated Sonic Refill Gold bundle of 20 workstation refills all together with an original value of over $700 for just $99!' That sounds like a good deal but would those refills+Fantom+logic compliment each other or am I doing it wrong? Alot of beatmakers are still using it (especially in the south I think), but I like virtuell synthesizer more because they are easyier workflow-wise.
I just load up 6 instances of any VST synth and get going. No cables, no limits, no 'getting up and moving over to synth rack to press buttons'. As far as the sound: Everything sounds good if used right. Hell yeah I'm still rocking my JV-1080. 'Technology Wise' I don't even wanna think about it's state heh. Why not i'll chip in.
This is how i go about the whole vst vs. Hardware thing.drum roll please.i have both haha. Reasons why: I find the workflow for each very different, so depending on how I'm feeling I can choose I particular workflow that fits my needs. Sometimes I'll do things all in hardware, sometimes all in software, and obviously sometimes a lil' of both. Back to the fantom: depending on the price it could be a great thing to have around. The stock sounds especially the brass and synths are sick. I know of a few producers for example that primarily only use the fantom for the majority of their sounds.
But you have to look at it from the big picture too, because having hardware has other seemingly unrelated costs such as cables, DI's/preamps, etc. It also depends on the rest of the things you have. My personal advice is that if you don't have Reason 4 and/or Komplete 6 get one of those first because that'll be great sounds for far less (i assume) then the fantom situation. I've had a fantom x6 for about 4 yrs.
The coolest thing about it is the D-beam. There are a bunch of virtual instruments that definitely sound better than the patches on the fantom. I really want to get 'Ivory' for piano sounds. EZdrummer smokes it for drum samples. Native instruments Komplete has tempted me. There is a long list of better virtual tools that can get expensive and very cpu hungry.
It is a good synth if you want an all in one workstation with a pot luck of decent sounds that is easy to work with. Synth and electronic patches are roland's strong suit. If you like acoustic organic instruments like pianos, organs, wurli's, strings etc. You should look at the kurzweil 2600 or pc3. It sounds better in those departments. Of course motif and triton are contenders but I liked the roland better when I bought mine and don't regret my decision.
